Picnic
The Hartford Bridge Club Picnic will be held on Sunday, June 8,
2008 at 12:00 noon. All Bridge Club members are welcome
to the free picnic lunch, however we can only accommodate 40
tables of bridge. If you plan to attend, sign up at the club. To
play in the game, you must pre-pay ($5.00 per person) in advance.
When the 40 tables are filled, no additional players will be
accepted. Of course, you may still come for the lunch, even if
you do not play in the game.
Pairer/Player Volunteers
When you join any organization, you get the benefits of
membership, but you also have a responsibility to
contribute according to your skills. Many people work together to
make the Hartford Bridge Club what it is today. What have YOU
done for your club?
Whether or not you ever come without a partner, you still
benefit from the Pairer/Player system because it not only keeps
singles from being sent home, it also reduces the number of games
with sit-outs, because the directors call in an additional player
to eliminate a sit-out whenever possible. So we ask EVERY MEMBER
to sign up occasionally to be a pairer/player. No special talent
is needed!
We have more than 500 members. If each member volunteered once a
year, we would have all the volunteers we need. This is an
area where YOU can fulfill YOUR responsibility to contribute to
the club. See Gene Coppa to sign up soon!
Health Alert!
Just a reminder: If you have a condition that you think might be
contagious, please consider staying home.

Updated Cell Phone Policy: Self-Reporting!
All cell phones are to be turned OFF during the bridge games. If you forget
to turn yours off and your phone rings, we ask that you quietly (and maturely)
report yourself to the director. We would like to cut down on the pointing
and jeering that now disrupt the games even more than a ringing phone.
New Director at the Club
Sally Kirtley will be the new
director of the Thursday evening game, starting in March.

(added January 31, 2008)
Earlier this week, we received an email from the ACBL that said:
The ACBL has just held its three millionth table
of bridge and (although this is not an exact science), we were processing your
club when this milestone was reached. In other words, the milestone is
considered to have been reached at your club, and we want to do a write-up for
the March magazine and honor your group. For this, we'd like to have a photo.
So we have taken several photos and sent them to the ACBL and they will
interview Donna for an article for the March Bridge Bulletin. We thought
you'd like to see the 8 photos we sent, from which they will probably select
ONE to publish.

Winter weather alert!
As we turn the calendar page to December...and face the first
forecast of the season for snow. It's time to remind everyone of the HBC
policy for snow closures.
MORNING GAMES
The club is closed when West Hartford schools are closed for
snow.
The club is OPEN at the regular game time
if there is a delayed opening for West Hartford schools.
[Time saving hint: NBC30 scrolls through the alphabet
MUCH more quickly than channels 3 or 8.]
AFTERNOON AND EVENING GAMES
For ALL games (morning, afternoon and evening) there will be
a message on the answering machine 2-3 hours prior to the game start-time.
If there is no closure message, assume the club is
open.
If you want to get your school closing information on the
internet,
here are the links:

(added August 21, 2007)
The HBC Board of Trustees is
pleased to announce the purchase of a Duplimate card-shuffling machine. Some of
the many benefits of this system include:
1)
Overall awards across sections;
2)
Hand records will be available at the end of each
game;
3)
Games will begin earlier, with no shuffling or
dealing;
4)
For games with pre-dealt hands (e.g., Unit Wide
Games), players would no longer have to suit boards or make up hands;
5)
The cards are shuffled seven times, which is
statistically the proper number of times a deck is supposed to be shuffled for a
pure mix. This assures the hands are 100% random.
The system will be in full
force as of September 7th. Although it should require little effort
to adjust, we request your patience.
Thanks go to Igor
Borcea and Committee members Doug Deacon, Hoby Littlefield, Dixie Mastrandrea
and Sue Seckinger. Special thanks to Doug and Sue who spent extra time setting
up the machine, preparing it for use and training directors. They are our
resident experts and can answer your questions.

Cell Phone Policy
At the June 16 meeting, the Board of Directors
banned the use of cell phones during the games at the bridge club. The
directors were instructed to remind us at the beginning of each game to turn
off all cell phones. As time went by, it became apparent that the
reminder didn't stop the phones from ringing, so at the July 21 meeting, the
Board added a "consequence": a procedural penalty.
What is a "procedural penalty"? Simply put, it
is a scoring penalty.
At the first offence, the player
will receive a "1/4 board penalty".
What does THAT mean? It depends on the
movement of
the game.
For example:
If there are 9 (3-board) rounds: top on a board is 8: 1/4
board penalty = 2 points deducted
If there are 13 (2-board) rounds: top on a board is 12:
1/4 board penalty = 3 points deducted
Repeat offences will result in an
escalating scale of deductions.
Remember that bridge is a "partnership game",
with no provision for individual scoring, so all penalties will be assessed
to both the offender AND his/her partner. So protect your own score, as
well as your partner's score: TURN OFF YOUR
