Opening 1 of a Minor suit
Warning! We are walking into a minefield here, but I promise to stay close to you.
One of a minor is a very common opening bid, but unlike some other opening bids it does not have limits. You
must be careful to further describe your hand in subsequent bids.

One club opening What do we know?
Re-bids by one club opener (with a minimal opener)
Re-bids by one club opener with a stronger hand.
|
#1 – You have at least 3 clubs, perhaps more.
#2 – You have at least 12/13 h.c.p., perhaps more.
#3 – For some unknown reason, you did not want to
open some # of no trump.
#4 - You probably do not have a 5 card major. You
did not open with 1 of a major.
#1 – Show a 4 card major (up the line) if there is room
e.g. 1C–1D– now 1H, 1C–1H- now 1S
#2 – Support partner’s major with 4 card support.
#3 – Re-bid one no trump with no 4 card major.
#4 – Re-bid your clubs with 6 or more.
#1 – With 15-16 h.c.p. you can still go s-l-o-w-l-y. If
partner passes you with a minimal hand, you were not
making a game anyway. However, a partner with 8/9+
h.c.p. should take another bid.
#2 – With 17-18 h.c.p., you can bid 2 no trump,
inviting 3 no trump. Partner may pass with a poor 5 or 6
points. Partner may have “strained” to keep the bidding
open for another round just to get you out of one club.
#3 – With 19-21 h.c.p. you can bid 3 no trump. Don’t
fool around – bid what you think you can make.
#4 – With 17–19 h.c.p. you can “reverse” into a new
suit at the 2 level.
#5 – If your hand is much stronger than these
possibilities, why didn’t you open 2 clubs? or 2 no
trump?
