Opening Bid – 1 of a Major (hearts or spades)

Opener promises 5+ cards in the suit.
13+ high card points would be nice, but
A-K-A is good enough in first or second seat.

Opener can be lighter in 3rd/4th seat (esp.
not vulnerable).

Re-bidding the major suit shows 6+

Is 1 No Trump forcing? Or does it
show 6-9 high card points? Partnership
should have firm agreements.

What’s it going to be? 1 No Trump =

How does responder show that he really likes the major suit opening, wants to force to game, and may be interested in more?

Many duplicate players are using Jacoby 2 No Trump, which is forcing to game in the major and promises 4+card support for the trump suit. Asks opener to show shortness (singleton or void) with next bid.

Re-bids by opener

3 of a new suit = shortness (singleton or void)

3 of the major = extra strength, 16+ points, no shortness but slam interest

3 No Trump = sound opening with no shortness

4 of a new suit = good 5 card second suit (more important to show than shortness)

4 of the major = "fast arrival", minimum opener, no slam interest
